End of an era: Hawkeyes brace for Carver goodbyes

It’s the end of an era. A team that has transcended women’s basketball and reached new heights will see its core starters say their goodbyes — at least for now.

There’s a high chance Iowa will play at least one more game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the NCAA tournament. But this will be the final regular season game for Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin, Gabbie Marshall, Molly Davis and Sharon Goodman.

They’ll take on Ohio State Sunday, and participate in a Senior Day ceremony afterwards.

“It’s bittersweet,” Clark said. “I’m lucky that we do Senior Day after the game is over — I think that’s very important. But my main goal is beating Ohio State, I think we’re all just super excited for another opportunity at them.”

“I just have a lot of emotions overwhelming me right now,” Martin said. “It’s very bittersweet going into this weekend. I’m sad that my time is dwindling down, but I’m excited just thinking about all that we accomplished and just how close I am with them.”

“I think the thing I’ll miss the most is just being around them every day,” Marshall said. “Thinking that that’s going to come to an end is just sad. But just knowing that we’ve been able to do so much together and have just been a part of such an amazing program.”

“You can’t help it, right? I get a little sentimental any time you have a senior class graduating,” head coach Lisa Bluder said. “This class has been pretty successful and pretty enjoyable to coach and so I think you’d have to be stone cold not to have some kind of emotion about it.”

The Hawkeyes could have 10 games remaining together, but they’ll embrace every last moment of this journey until it’s over.
